We believe that the increasing political divisiveness of the last two decades has done harm to our country. There is much that unites us as Americans, regardless of political ideology. There are certain fundamental changes in American government that the vast majority of Americans would like to see happen. FixitTogether.org seeks to bring Americans together, regardless of political ideology, to mobilize for action to accomplish that change. FixitTogether.org is completely non-partisan and is not affiliated with any political party or other group. We believe that, together, we really can fix our country.

We support a set of four constitutional amendments that can be adopted through the Article V constitutional amendment process. Surveys show that Americans—mainstream citizens of all political stripes—already support most of them. None are very controversial. They are:

    1. A balanced budget amendment, requiring that the government only spend as much as it takes in (supported by 76% of Americans).

    2. A term limits amendment for Congress, limiting Senators to two terms and Representatives to three terms (supported by 71% of Americans).

    3. An amendment reforming our judicial system by imposing term limits on judges and requiring that they be approved by the people in retention elections before they take office (supported by 74% of Americans).

    4. An amendment prohibiting unfunded mandates, which would prevent Congress from passing any laws affecting state governments unless it provides the funding required to pay for those laws (supported by 69% of Americans).

Surveys show that 72% of Americans either have no preference as to which method is used to amend the constitution, or prefer that conventions be used instead of Congress. About 78% of Americans said that the fact that an Article V convention has never been used either makes no difference to their level of support for them, or makes them more in favor of holding a convention.

FixitTogether.org was founded by James Kenneth Rogers, a recent law school graduate. For years, he had been concerned about the growing national debt and corruption in our government. Seeing dim prospects for any change coming from within the Washington establishment, he looked for ideas about how we, as everyday Americans, could force the government to accept reforms that enjoyed widespread support among the people. As he searched, proposing amendments through the Article V convention process seemed like the only way to bring about the needed change. In 2007, while in law school, James wrote a student note (pdf link) that was published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy about the Article V convention process. Since that time, he has been seeking out like-minded people and building up the group that has become FixitTogether.org.

FixitTogether.org is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Arizona. We are registered with the IRS as a 527 organization. FixitTogether.org does not advocate the election or defeat of any candidate for federal or state elective office.
